About Jennifer

Soprano Jennifer Carter has been praised as “a wonderfully honest and communicative performer” (Opera Programs Berlin) and “consummate singing actor” (BarzcaBlog).

Ms. Carter opens the 2024-2025 season with Vier letzte Lieder by Strauss as part of the St. Andrew’s noon hour recital series in Kitchener. In November she sings the Mother in Hansel and Gretel with Grand River Opera, and in April she will sing operatic excerpts with the K-W Community Orchestra on their Opernball concert. 


In the 2023-2024 season, she sang Miss Jessel (The Turn of the Screw) and Silvia (Zanetto) with Grand River Opera. In summer 2023, she sang Helmwige (Die Walküre), Strauss and Korngold lieder in recital, and studied Brünnhilde (Die Walküre), with Dramatic Voices Program Berlin. She returned to TUNDI’s Wagner in Vermont Festival, reprising Ortlinde (Die Walküre), covering Waldvogel (Siegfried), and singing excerpts as Eva (Die Meistersinger) and Woglinde (Das Rheingold). In spring 2023, she sang the title role in Suor Angelica with Grand River Opera. She also appeared as 5.te Magd (Elektra) and as Chrysothemis (Elektra, excerpt) and Kaiserin (Die Frau ohne Schatten, excerpts) in a series of Strauss Concerts with TUNDI Productions.


In 2022, Ms. Carter appeared onstage as 4.te Magd (Elektra) with Powerhouse Opera, while covering Chrysothemis. She performed Ortlinde (Die Walküre), having originally been the cover for TUNDI Productions’ Wagner in Vermont Festival. She also participated in their Practicum program for dramatic voices, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. In 2022 she was also awarded a Professional Development Grant by the Canada Council of the Arts, to assist her move into the dramatic soprano repertoire. 


In 2020, she was both Rheinmaiden and Valkyrie in the joint Toronto production of Wagner’s Ring Cycle by Opera by Request and Berlin Opera Gruppe, singing Wellgunde (Das Rheingold, Götterdämmerung) and Waltraute (Die Walküre). Previously she sang both Wellgunde and Woglinde (Das Rheingold) with Dramatic Voices Program Berlin and Canadian Operatic Arts Academy. 


Other roles have included a staged excerpt as Ariadne auf Naxos, and La badessa (Suor Angelica) with Opera Susquehanna; Violetta (La traviata) with Opera Oshawa and Opera By Request; Donna Anna (Don Giovanni) with Capital City Opera and Opera Vi/Vace; Erste Dame/First Lady (Die Zauberflöte/The Magic Flute) with Premiere Productions and Oshawa Opera; and Mimì (La bohème) with The Colours of Music Festival, Barrie and Opera by Request, Toronto. Opera Kitchener featured her as Pamina (Die Zauberflöte) . Ms. Carter has been featured in recital on the concert series at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Kitchener, and the Encore! Professionals recital series at Brock University, St. Catherines. She was the soprano soloist for Handel’s Messiah with the Vocal Horizons Chamber Choir in 2015, and sang the world premiere of “The Song of Ruth” by Niagara region composer Erik Gero. 


Ms. Carter holds dual Canadian-British citizenship, and currently resides in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. She maintains an independent voice studio, teaching singing to amateur and pre-professional singers, and is the Artistic Director of Grand River Opera.
