These programs included lessons, coachings, movement & acting classes, as well as public masterclasses, where Ms. Carter had the privilege to work with distinguished faculty, including Martin Katz, Eric Melear, Gary Wedow, Timothy Vernon, and Carrie-Anne Matheson. At the COAA program she also appeared in staged excerpts from Nixon in China (Pat Nixon), Carmen (Frasquita), Pagliacci (Nedda/Colombina), and Das Rheingold (Woglinde).
This season Ms. Carter has upcoming engagements in Toronto as Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, with ODD Opera; and as Violetta in La Traviata with Opera by Request. Next fall she will return to the role of Mimì in La Bohème at the Colours of Music Festival in Barrie, having sung it previously with Opera by Request in Toronto and Hamilton. She has completed both the Opera Apprenticeship and Masters of Music programs at the University of Manitoba, studying with Tracy Dahl. While in Winnipeg, Ms. Carter appeared in the university’s school tours of Hansel and Gretel (as Mother/Witch) and Mozart: A Life Worth Noting (as Mozart’s Mother/Soprano 2), an original show which told the story of Mozart’s life through his music. She also appeared with Manitoba Opera as a Maiden in Le Nozze di Figaro, and on the concert “Stories that Sing” in a quintet from Carmen; and with the Little Opera Company as Mrs. Gobineau in The Medium. She also was a winner of the Orville J. Derraugh Scholarship Competition, a finalist in the Winnipeg Music Festival Rose Bowl Competition, and a Provincial Finalist in the Canadian Music Competition. She has performed regularly in recital and concert, most recently in a joint recital in Winnipeg with mezzo-soprano Jennifer Sproule, as well as on concerts Welland and Toronto. She has been the soprano soloist in Handel’s Messiah with the Strathroy Chorale, and in Mozart’s Regina Coeli (K. 276) with the Palestrina Chamber Chorus. In 2004, Ms. Carter had the privilege of creating the role of a lake-spirit, Ishi, in Once a Shoreline, an original musical presented by Jumblies Theatre and the Davenport-Perth Community Centre in Toronto, involving professional performers and over a hundred community members. Additional operatic roles have included Countess Almaviva (Le Nozze di Figaro) with the Symphony and Opera Academy of the Pacific, Meg (Little Women) with Tryptych, Clarice (Voyage to the Moon) with Summer Opera Lyric Theatre, as well as Laetitia (The Old Maid and the Thief), First Lady (Die Zauberflöte), and Second Woman (Dido and Aeneas) with York University, where she completed her undergraduate degree. She has also appeared as a member of the chorus with Manitoba Opera, Toronto Operetta Theatre, Opera Hamilton, and Opera York and studied at the Songs and Scenes training program with Queen of Puddings Music Theatre in Toronto. Ms. Carter currently resides in the Niagara region of Ontario, where she also maintains a teaching studio. |
